EL ESCORIAL and THE VALLEY OF THE FALLEN Built by Felipe II, anyone visiting Madrid or Spain must visit this monastery. It was built to commemorate the resounding victory over the French during 1557. The complex includes a royal palace, museums, church and it is generally viewed along with the VALLEY OF THE FALLEN. The incredible library houses over 40,000 rare books and manuscripts and the Tapestry room as an incredible selection of tapestries by some of the finest names in the world. The tombs of the kings are fascinating - in short the grandeur of the whole country is reflected in EL ESCORIAL. Don't miss it. Is equally if not more impressive. Built to commemorate the fallen during the bloody Spanish Civil War. It is a basilica carved out of the inside of a hill in solid granite. You will be surrounded with incredible views, it is awe-inspiring. Royal Palace was built during the 1700's, and it has 2,800 (yes, two thousand eight hundred) rooms, with each being more opulent than the other. The guided tour takes two hours and your walk will be over one mile long! Some of the finer salons are the Salon de Gasparini, with King's private apartments and the Banquet Hall. Possibly among our favorite 3 museums. The collections are staggering especially the rooms dedicated to Goya, Velazques and El Greco. You can easily spend the entire day here. This was the summer residence of the Bourbon Royal Family. The Royal Palace is the prime attraction. It has amazing interiors and wonderful gardens along the river. Don't miss the Casa del Labrador (Farmer's Cottage) built by King Carlos IV in 1804 - it has an incredible interior and lovely collections. SALAMANCA - 124 miles from Madrid A majestic university town, a monument of Spanish Renaissance. The city rises up on a promontory at the foot of the River Tormes. It is beautiful. SEGOVIA - 54 miles from Madrid A city founded by the Romans and rich in Roman and medieval monuments. This is where to shop for embroidered goods. The city was an important garrison in Roman times, and was later further established by the Arabs. Its Royal Palace - the Palacio de La Granja is on the slopes of the Guadarrama range. It is quite stunning with wonderful gardens - indeed visitors come mainly to see the gardens with their fountains, terraces, lakes and woods. SEVILLA Sevilla is one of the most charming cities in Spain - full of Moorish architecture and influence, although it dates from Roman times. Not to be missed is the Alcazar Fortress-one of the finest examples of Mudejar architecture in Spain today. It is the official residence of the King and Queen. |
